    1 One man's meat is another man's poison.這是英語的一句諺語，意思是“對一方有利的未必對另一方也有利”。有時可譯作“各有所愛”同時也有漢語俗語“蘿卜青菜各有所愛”的意思。
    2 would turn at the idea of… turn此處作“惡心”、“作嘔”解。at the idea of…是“想到…”的意思。
    3 to be brought up，養(yǎng)育，撫養(yǎng)。stick to有“堅持”的意思。
    4 Cooked in wine, snails...用酒烹調(diào)的蝸牛...這是過去分詞作狀語。表示條件。
    5 I happened to be walking in the garden.我碰巧在花園里散步。happen后面加不定式表示"碰巧做..."
    6 take(亦作have) possession of,是“占有”、“擁有”的意思。

    1 A skeleton in the cupboard，直譯為“柜中骸骸”，此系一成語作“家丑”解釋。
    2 conceal sth from sb.作“對某人隱瞞某事”解說。

    4 to varying degrees，在不同程度上。
    5 stood in front of it petrified，站在柜前嚇呆了。
    stand此處表示處于某種狀態(tài)，起系動詞的作用，后面常接形容詞、介詞短語或過去分詞，表示主語處于某種狀態(tài)中的特征，可視作表語。
    6 the impression that it was about to leap out...，that引導的從句作impression的同位語。be about to do sth，表示按照計劃即將做的動作。

    1 Cutty Sark,“卡蒂薩克”號，19世紀一艘的帆船?，F(xiàn)在這艘船在倫敦格林威治作為展品被保護了起來。在輪船時代以前，它是那時侯快的帆船。

    也可寫成both of these ships 或 both ships。
    3 The first of the two ships to reach Java ...,兩艘船中首先到達爪哇的···。不定式短語to reach Java此處作定語，修飾first。中間被另一個修飾fi rst的介詞短語of the two ships所分開。

    lose one's lead，失去其地位。
    5 There is no doubt that if she had not lost her rudder she would have won the race easily毫無疑間，如果中途沒有失去舵，“卡蒂薩克”號肯定能在比賽中輕易奪冠。這是一個虛擬語氣的句子，是對過去的一種假設(shè)。

    1 No one can avoid being influenced by advertisements.
    沒有人能避免受廣告的影響。
    avoid一詞需接動名詞作賓語，being influenced是動名詞一般式的被動形式
    2 Much as we may pride ourselves...，盡管我們可以自夸……，雖然我們可以為...而感到自豪。
    這是一個讓步狀語從句，連詞much as可以譯成"雖然很..."
    3 get something for nothing，免費得到。
    4 go wrong，出差錯，出毛病。
    5 the response to this competition，對這一競賽的反響。
