1. A flight attendent would take charge of me…我總是由一位空中乘務(wù)員照管……
would表示過去經(jīng)常發(fā)生的事,它與 used to的區(qū)別參見第55 課語法。 take charge(of)為固定短語,表示“接管”、“開始管理”等:
She took charge of the child after his parents died.
孩子的父母去世后,她接管了那孩子。
The new manager will take charge (of the company) from next week.
新經(jīng)理從下星期開始管理公司。
2.…only on one occasion have I ever felt frightened.……只是有把我嚇壞了。
這是一個倒裝句。倒裝句的結(jié)構(gòu)為“副詞+助動詞(be, do, have, can, must等)+主語+句子的其余部分”。它通常用來加強(qiáng)語氣,是典型的正式修辭和正式文體。用倒裝句的情況包括:
(1)句首為否定或近似否定的副詞(never, rarely, little, on no occasion, hardly, no sooner…than等):
Never has he got so many letters.
他從未收到過這么多信。
Little does he realize how important this meeting is.
他對這個會議的重要性知之甚少。
On no occasion must you accept any money if he offers it.
他如果給你錢,你可絕不能接受。
Hardly had he begun his speech when he was interrupted.

(2)句首為only構(gòu)成的詞組(如 only after, only then等):
Only then did I realize what a mistake I have made.

Only after she had taken off her coat and hat could I recognize her.

3. gain height,(飛機(jī))增加高度,爬高。
gain在這里為及物動詞,表示“增加”:
The car gained speed when it was outside the town.
汽車駛出城區(qū)后便加快了速度。
He has gained so much weight that he decides to go on a diet.
他體重增加得太多了,便決定節(jié)食。
4.touch down,(飛機(jī))著陸,降落。
After eight hours, the plane touched down at New York airport.
8小時之后,飛機(jī)在紐約機(jī)場著陸。
Don't stand up before the plane has touched down.
飛機(jī)著陸前不要站起來。
5. Everybody on board was worried …飛機(jī)上的人都很著急……
固定短語on board表示“搭乘(船、飛機(jī)、火車、汽車等)”、“在(船、飛機(jī)、火車、汽車等)上”:
Tom has never been on board a plane before.
湯姆以前從沒有乘過飛機(jī)。
There was a very important person on board(the ship).

這是一個非限定性關(guān)系從句,修飾逗號前的 the Crystal Palace。
這個從句如果去掉并不影響主句的意思。
2.It was one of the biggest buildings of all time…它是有史以來高大的建筑物之一……
of all time表示“有史以來”、“空前的”,常與形容詞的高級連用,表示范圍:
He is one of the greatest men of all time.
他是有史以來偉大的人物之一。
one of+高級+復(fù)數(shù)名詞結(jié)構(gòu)的語氣比直接用形容詞高級+名詞結(jié)構(gòu)要緩和些,不那么絕對。試比較:
Yesterday was the hottest day of the year.
昨天是今年熱的一天。(語氣非常肯定)
Yesterday was one of the hottest days of the year.
昨夭是今年熱的日子之一。(語氣緩和些)
3.There was also a great deal of machinery on display. 參展的還有很多機(jī)器。
(1)machinery為“機(jī)器”、“機(jī)械裝置”的總稱,是集合名詞,要與單數(shù)動詞搭配。某個具體的機(jī)器可用 machine或者 a piece of machinery來表示:
This is a wonderful piece of machinery/a wonderful machine.
這是一臺奇妙的機(jī)器。
There is a lot of new machinery/There are many new machines in our factory.
我們廠里有許多新機(jī)器。
(2)on display與下面一句話中的 on show同義,都表示“陳列著”、“展示著”,在句子中可以作狀語、定語或表語等:
At the Great Exhibition, a great many goods were on display/show.
世界博覽會上展出了大量的商品。(表語)
This is the best dress on display/show.
這是展出的好的衣服。(定語)
Shall we put all these flowers on display/show?
我們要把所有這些花都陳列出來嗎?(賓語補(bǔ)足語)
4. There were six million visitors in all…參觀的人數(shù)總共是 600 萬……
in all為固定短語,其含義之一為“總共”、“合計(jì)”:
I paid him £ 200 in all.
我一共付給他200英鎊。
At the wedding there were over 100 people in all.
參加婚禮的共有一百多人。
5. It remained one of the most famous buildings in the world…它一直是世界上的建筑物之一……
remain在這里作系動詞,表示“保持不變”、“仍然”(后面可跟形容詞、名詞、動名詞等):
Why did you remain silent/quiet at the dinner party?
你在宴會上為何一言不發(fā)?
They all remained standing while the manager talked.
經(jīng)理講話時他們一直站著。

change into 在這里表示“換(衣)”:
He changed into his new dress and went to the party.

2.…the prisoner marched boldly up and down in front of the camp. ……(那戰(zhàn)俘)在軍營門前大膽地來回走著。
march 一般用于指部隊(duì)“行軍”、“行進(jìn)”,但在這里它表示“(威風(fēng)凜凜/從容不迫地)走”或“迅速地走”:
Jane marched out of the room without saying a word.
簡一言未發(fā),快步走出了房問。
up and down 為固定詞組,其含義之一為“來來回回”:
He was worried about his mother and walked up and down in the room.

3.men were running here and there, 人們在東奔西跑。
here and there 為固定短語,表示“到處”、“四處”:
That morning there were policemen here and there.
那天上午到處都有警察。
They went here and there looking for the lost child.

4.…the prisoner stood to attention and saluted as they passed.
……戰(zhàn)俘立正站好,并在他們從他面前經(jīng)過時敬了禮。
attention 在此表示“立正姿勢”。單用“Attention!”表示口令“立正!”“立正站著”則用短語 stand at/to attention表示:
The students stood at/to attention while the headmaster made a speech.
校長發(fā)表演說時學(xué)生們立正站著。
