The trial of a German couple accused of brutally raping and killing a Chinese student has once again sparked public concern over the safety of overseas Chinese.

It is then alleged that the pair lured Li into an abandoned house while she was jogging and raped her repeatedly, leaving her with injuries that the couple believed to be fatal. When they returned to find the girl still alive, they hid her in a pile of underbrush, according to Deutsche Welle.

The hearing ended after one hour. The two defendants have opted not to publicly address the allegations against them for the time being, AFP reported.
