When Henry ford decided to produce his famous v-8 motor, he chose to build an engine with the entire eight cylinders cast in one block, and instructed his engineers to produce a design in one for the engine. The design was placed on paper, but the engineers agreed, to a man, that it was simply impossible to cast an eight-cylinder engine-block in one piece.
Ford said, “Produce it anyway.”
“But,” they replied, “It’s impossible!”
“Go ahead.” Ford commanded, “And stay on the job until you succeed, no matter how much time is required.”
The engineers went ahead. There was nothing else for them to do, if they were to remain on the ford staff. Six months passed and nothing happened. Another six months passed, and still nothing happened. The engineers tried every conceivable plan to carry out the orders, but the thing seemed out of the question:“impossible!”
At the end of the year ford checked with his engineers, and again they informed him they had found no way to carry out his orders.
“go right head,” said ford, “I want it, and I’ll have it.”
They went ahead, and then, as if by a stroke of magic, the secret was discovered.
The ford determination had won once more!

５月２７日下午，南京大學(xué)隆重舉行慶功會(huì)。載譽(yù)歸來的劉欣身著出征國際講壇的淺色淡花旗袍，娓娓追述倫敦奪冠經(jīng)歷，深深吸引了在場數(shù)百生代表，其中不少是金發(fā)碧眼的外籍教師與留學(xué)生。
一年一度的國際英語演講比賽，由國際英語聯(lián)合會(huì)主辦。今年共有２０個(gè)國家的３７名選手參加，是歷屆比賽人數(shù)多的。來自英語為母語國家的選手，如英國、美國、澳大利亞、奧地利等，占了相當(dāng)數(shù)量。中國參賽的４名選手，分別出自南大、北大、北外、外交學(xué)院，是不久前舉辦的“２１世紀(jì)杯”全國英語演講比賽的獲勝者中選出來的。就在那次薈萃全國英語教學(xué)具實(shí)力的２２所大學(xué)頂尖高手激烈角逐之中，劉欣以高居榜首的優(yōu)異成績奪得冠軍，取得參加國際英語演講大賽的資格。
此次國際比賽規(guī)定頗為嚴(yán)格，要求每位參賽選手自行選定演講題目，作５分鐘自由演講，然后有２分鐘時(shí)間回答評(píng)委所提出的問題。評(píng)委按照“演講內(nèi)容”、“理解和回答問題的能力”、“演講風(fēng)格和技能”、“總體效果”等要素進(jìn)行評(píng)分。

新東方有個(gè)學(xué)員現(xiàn)在在Duke大學(xué)，他從高一開始背《新概念英語》第三冊，背到高三就背完了。高考考進(jìn)了北大，進(jìn)北大后，他本來不想再背了。但當(dāng)他背給同學(xué)聽的時(shí)候，其他同學(xué)都露出了羨慕的眼光，于是，為了這種虛榮心，他就堅(jiān)持背第四冊，把第三、四冊都背得滾瓜爛熟，他熟到什么地步呢，有人把其中任何一句說出來，把能把上一句和下一句連接下去，而且語音非常標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，因?yàn)樗悄７轮艓肀车?。后來他去了美國Duke大學(xué)，他給新東方的教師寫信，老師不敢回，因?yàn)槔蠋煂?duì)他的英文有畏懼感，他的英文學(xué)得太好，只能給他回中文信，并告訴他不是不會(huì)寫英文，而是想讓他溫習(xí)溫習(xí)中文，不要忘記祖國的語言。

１９９６年５月１７日，在倫敦舉行的國際英語演講比賽上，一個(gè)非英語國家的姑娘，２１歲的南京大學(xué)外國語學(xué)院三年級(jí)學(xué)生劉欣，竟然在英語本土力克眾多英語國家選手，獲得第一名，為首次推派選手參賽的祖國贏得了殊榮。
５月２７日下午，南京大學(xué)隆重舉行慶功會(huì)。載譽(yù)歸來的劉欣身著出征國際講壇的淺色淡花旗袍，娓娓追述倫敦奪冠經(jīng)歷，深深吸引了在場數(shù)百生代表，其中不少是金發(fā)碧眼的外籍教師與留學(xué)生。
一年一度的國際英語演講比賽，由國際英語聯(lián)合會(huì)主辦。今年共有２０個(gè)國家的３７名選手參加，是歷屆比賽人數(shù)多的。來自英語為母語國家的選手，如英國、美國、澳大利亞、奧地利等，占了相當(dāng)數(shù)量。中國參賽的４名選手，分別出自南大、北大、北外、外交學(xué)院，是不久前舉辦的“２１世紀(jì)杯”全國英語演講比賽的獲勝者中選出來的。就在那次薈萃全國英語教學(xué)具實(shí)力的２２所大學(xué)頂尖高手激烈角逐之中，劉欣以高居榜首的優(yōu)異成績奪得冠軍，取得參加國際英語演講大賽的資格。
此次國際比賽規(guī)定頗為嚴(yán)格，要求每位參賽選手自行選定演講題目，作５分鐘自由演講，然后有２分鐘時(shí)間回答評(píng)委所提出的問題。評(píng)委按照“演講內(nèi)容”、“理解和回答問題的能力”、“演講風(fēng)格和技能”、“總體效果”等要素進(jìn)行評(píng)分。
“演講內(nèi)容”無疑是重頭戲，占評(píng)比總分４０％。各國選手無不選擇一個(gè)個(gè)緊扣國際社會(huì)的“熱點(diǎn)”選題大下功夫，如恐怖主義影響、艾滋病、安樂死、教育、性別改變等。而劉欣所作的演講選題為《鏡子與我》，更有獨(dú)辟蹊徑之妙。她從幼時(shí)趴在比自己個(gè)頭還高的梳妝臺(tái)上照鏡子說起，對(duì)祖母所言“為什么我在鏡子里看不到自己？”不明其意，及至長大以后方知祖母是位典型的傳統(tǒng)婦女，大多時(shí)間與灶間相伴，家中的事情從來不能作主，幾乎成了一個(gè)被遺忘的人，因而發(fā)出如上感嘆。隨之她話鋒一轉(zhuǎn)，稱道現(xiàn)代的中國婦女發(fā)生了翻天覆地的變化，她們和男人地位平等，在學(xué)習(xí)、就業(yè)等方面可以有自己的選擇，像祖母那樣“生活中沒有自己”、因而“鏡子中看不到自己”的狀態(tài)已經(jīng)過去。
劉欣的演講貌似羅列個(gè)人生活瑣事。實(shí)則折射時(shí)代與社會(huì)風(fēng)云，融中國婦女漫長而曲折的命運(yùn)變遷歷程于一面平平常常的鏡子之中，包含深刻而豐厚的文化內(nèi)涵。加之她純正、流利的英語表達(dá)和高雅、大方的風(fēng)度顯示，令嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)、挑剔的評(píng)委頻頻點(diǎn)頭。
提問開始了，頭一個(gè)問題就頗為刁鉆：“你一直在說照鏡子，請(qǐng)問在鏡子里我們看見的，到底是我們真實(shí)的自己還是僅僅是我們的圖像？”劉欣幾乎不假思索地脫口而出：“這全在于自己，你覺得是什么就是什么！”第二個(gè)問題更為尖刻、厲害：“你說舊中國的婦女沒有地位，《紅樓夢》中的賈母不是高高在上嗎？我問你一個(gè)具體事情，你外公死后，家里辦喪事時(shí)，你舅舅難道一點(diǎn)都不和你外婆商量嗎？”“商量是要商量的，但后的決定權(quán)還是在我舅舅手上?！眲⑿酪廊谎附莼卮穑瑥娜葜型嘎冻?。
由國際英語聯(lián)合會(huì)副主席、英國BBC節(jié)目主持人、金融時(shí)報(bào)撰稿人等權(quán)威人士組成的評(píng)委團(tuán)，對(duì)劉欣的參賽作出了“這位女選手一出場就吸引人，演講結(jié)構(gòu)完美，表演脫俗，禮儀很好”綜合評(píng)價(jià)，一致同意授予劉欣一等獎(jiǎng)。當(dāng)這一評(píng)比結(jié)果當(dāng)眾宣布，賽場上掌聲雷動(dòng)。

人總是在遭遇重創(chuàng)之后，才會(huì)幡然醒悟，重新認(rèn)識(shí)自己的堅(jiān)強(qiáng)和堅(jiān)忍。所以，無論你正在遭遇什么磨難，都不要一味抱怨上蒼不公平，甚至從此一蹶不振。人生沒有過不去的坎，只有過不去的人。
