TV Game Shows
One of the most fascinating things about television is the size of the audience. A novel can be on the “best seller” lists with a sale of fewer than 100,000 copies, but a popular TV show might have 70 million TV viewers. TV can make anything or anyone well-known overnight.
This is the principle behind “quiz” or “game” shows , which put ordinary people on TV to play a game for prizes and money. A quiz show can make anyone a star , and it can give away thousands of dollars in the U.S. and almost everyone watched them. Charles Van Doren ,an English instructor, became rich and famous after winning money on several shows. He even had a career as a television personality. But one of the losers proved that Charles Van Doren was cheating. It turned out that the show‘s producers who were pulling the strings, gave the answers to the most popular contestants
beforehand. Why ? Because if the audience didn’t like the person who won the game, they turned the show off. The result of this cheating was a huge scandal. Based on his story, a movie under the title “Quiz Show” is on 40 years later.
Charles Van Doren is no longer involved with TV. But game shows are still here, though they aren‘t taken as seriously. In fact , some of them try to be as ridiculous as possible. There are shows that send strangers on vacation trips together, or that try to cause newly-married couples to fight on TV, or that punish losers by humiliation them. The entertainment now is to see what people will do just to be on TV. People still win money, but the real prize is to be in front of an audience of millions.

The paper Chase
“Running a house is a lot like running a business.” says Stephanie Denton, a professional organizer based in Cincinnati, Ohio, who specializes in both residential and commercial paperwork and record keeping. To get a successful grip on organizing documents, bills, and other materials, Denton suggests the following tips:
Create a space in which you can always do your paperwork. This is perhaps the most important element of a successful system. If you can’t devote an entire desk to the task, at least invest in a rolling file cart to store active paperwork and a two-drawer file cabinet for family records. Store the rolling file cart wherever it is most convenient and comfortable to do your work, whether that is the kitchen, office, or family room.
When in doubt, throw it out. The first step to implementing a workable filing system is to eliminate paper you don’t use, don’t need, or that you could easily access again elsewhere. Throw out duplicate statements, old catalogs, and all of the coupons, mailings, or offerings you’ll never have an opportunity to use or even read.
Set aside two days a month to pay bills. If a monthly due date doesn’t fit into your cycle, call up the creditor and suggest a more convenient date. Keep two manila folders at the front of your system for current bills –one to correspond with each bill-paying day –and file all incoming bills. Keep a list in the front of each folder of what needs to be paid in case the invoice never arrives or gets misplaced.
Think of your filing system not as a rigid tool, but as a living, breathing system that can accommodate your changing needs. A good filing system is both mentally and physically flexible. Everyone’s needs are different, says Denton, but when devising a filling system, ask yourself: “where would I look for this?” Create main headings for your filing system, such as Investments, Taxes, Children, and so forth, and file individual folders under the main headings. Never overstuff your files.

New Foods and the New World
In the last 500 years, nothing about people-not their clothes, ideas, or languages-has changed as much as what they eat. The original chocolate drink was made from the seeds of the cocoa tree (可可樹) by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500‘s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became fashionable. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today.
The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the “Potato Famine (饑荒)” of 1845-1846, and thousands more were forced to leave their homeland and move to America.
There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the world’s largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in Colombia and other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia, a country in Africa. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400‘s.
According to an Arabic legend, coffee was discovered when a person named Kaldi noticed that his goats were attracted to the red berries on a coffee bush. He tried one and experienced the “wide-awake” feeling that one-third of the world’s population now starts the day with.

Hitchhiking(搭車旅游)
When I was in my teens(十幾歲)and 20s,hitchhiking was a main form of long-distance transport. The kindness or curiosity of strangers(51)me all over Europe,North America,Asia and southern Africa. Some of the lift-givers became friends, many provided hospitality(52)the road.
Not only did you find out much more about a country than(53)traveling by train or plane, but also there was that element of excitement about where you would finish up that night.Hitchhiking featured importantly in Western culture. It has books and songs about it.So what has happened to (54)?
A few years ago,I asked the same question about hitchhiking in a column on a newspaper.(55)of people from all over the world responded with their view on the state of hitchhiking.
“If there is a hitchhiker’s (56)it must be lran,”came one reply.Rural lreland was recommended as a friendly place for hitchhiking,(57)was Quebec,Canada-“if you don‘t mind being berated(嚴(yán)厲指責(zé))for not speaking French.”
But while hitchhiking was clearly still alive and well in many parts of the world, the (58)feeling was that throughout much of the west it was doomed(消亡)。
With so much news about crime in the media, people assumed that anyone on the open road without the money for even a bus ticket must present a danger. But do we(59)to be so wary both to hitchhike and to give a lift?
In Poland in the 1960s,(60)a Polish woman who e-mailed me,“the authorities introduced the Hitchhiker’s Booklet. The booklet contained coupons for drivers,so each time a driver(61)somebody,he or she received a coupon. At the end of the season,(62)who had picked up the most hikers were rewarded with various prizes.Everybody was hitchhiking then.”
Surely this is a good idea for society.Hitchhiking would increase respect by breaking down(63)between strangers. It would help fight(64)warming by cutting down on fuel consumption as hitchhikers would be using existing fuels. It would also improve eductional standards by delivering instant(65)in geography, history, politics and sociology.
