        孫子》,又稱《孫子兵法》、《孫武兵法》和《吳孫子兵法》,是中國古代的兵書,作者為春秋末年的齊國人孫武(字長卿)。一般認(rèn)為,《孫子兵法》成書于專諸刺吳王僚之后至闔閭?cè)陮O武見吳王之間,也即前515至前512年,全書為十三篇,是孫武初次見面贈送給吳王的見面禮;事見司馬遷《史記》:“孫子武者,齊人也,以兵法見吳王闔閭。闔閭曰:子之十三篇吾盡觀之矣”。
            《孫子兵法》是世界上最早的兵書之一。在中國被奉為兵家經(jīng)典,后世的兵書大多受到它的影響,對中國的軍事學(xué)發(fā)展影響非常深遠(yuǎn)。它也被翻譯成多種語言,在世界軍事也具有重要的地位。
            全書共分十三篇,主要論述了軍事學(xué)的主要問題,對當(dāng)時和現(xiàn)在的戰(zhàn)爭經(jīng)驗進(jìn)行了總結(jié),提出了一些的革命性軍事命題,并且揭示了一些具有普遍意義的軍事規(guī)律。
            譯者簡介:翟林奈 (Lionel Giles,1875~1958)是英國第一代漢學(xué)家翟理斯之子,出生在中國,子承父業(yè),成為英國的第二代漢學(xué)家。翟林奈1900年進(jìn)入英國博物館東方圖書與寫本部,負(fù)責(zé)管理中國圖書。不久,斯坦因第二次中亞探險所獲敦煌文書材料入藏該館,翟林奈開始從事漢文寫本的編目,研究工作,并為此貢獻(xiàn)畢生精力,其所編《英國博物館藏敦煌漢文寫本注記目錄》在去世前一年出版,其他著作還有《敦煌六世紀(jì)》(Six Centuries at Tunhang,London,1944)及有關(guān)歷史地理、戶籍、俗文學(xué)作品論文多種,還譯過《孫子兵法》、《論語》等。

            孫子曰:兵者,國之大事,死生之地,存亡之道,不可不察也。
            Sun Tzu said: The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected.
            故經(jīng)之以五事,校之以計,而索其情:一曰道,二曰天,三曰地,四曰將,五曰法。
            The art of war, then, is governed by five constant factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations, when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field.
            These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline.
            道者,令民于上同意,可與之死,可與之生,而不危也;
            The Moral Law causes the people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so that they will follow him regardless of their lives, undismayed by any danger.
            天者,陰陽、寒暑、時制也;
            Heaven signifies night and day, cold and heat, times and seasons.
            地者,遠(yuǎn)近、險易、廣狹、死生也;
            Earth comprises distances, great and small; danger and security; open ground and narrow passes; the chances of life and death.
            將者,智、信、仁、勇、嚴(yán)也;
            The Commander stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerely, benevolence, courage and strictness.
            法者,曲制、官道、主用也。
            By method and discipline are to be understood the marshaling of the army in its proper subdivisions, the graduations of rank among the officers, the maintenance of roads by which supplies may reach the army, and the control of military expenditure.
            凡此五者,將莫不聞,知之者勝,不知之者不勝。
            These five heads should be familiar to every general: he who knows them will be victorious; he who knows them not will fail.
