    Kendal mint cake是英國(guó)肯達(dá)爾市特產(chǎn)，攀山者不少攜作干糧，以補(bǔ)充體力，所以赫克特說(shuō)：A lot of expeditions stock up on that.Stock up是'儲(chǔ)備'.要說(shuō)儲(chǔ)備的東西，可用on/with帶出；要說(shuō)儲(chǔ)備的用途，則可用for帶出，例如：We stocked up on/with firewood for the winter（我們儲(chǔ)備木柴，準(zhǔn)備過(guò)冬）。赫克特又談到挪威北部：That's pretty tough country.這個(gè)country不是之前談過(guò)的'鄉(xiāng)間'，也不是'國(guó)家'，而是'有某種特色的地方'，例如open country是'曠野'，wooded country是'樹(shù)木蓊郁的地方'.We traveled over plains and mountainous country即'我們走過(guò)平原，走過(guò)山區(qū)'.留意這個(gè)意思的country是不可數(shù)名詞（uncountable noun），沒(méi)有復(fù)數(shù)形式，也不可冠以a字。第二版《朗文當(dāng)代高級(jí)辭典》中英雙解本mountainous條下把mountainous country譯做'多山國(guó)家'，恐怕就是譯者誤解了。'多山國(guó)家'應(yīng)是a mountainous country.說(shuō)到'國(guó)家'，英文可分為三個(gè)字：country、state、nation.Country是指地理上劃分的國(guó)家，state是指國(guó)家的獨(dú)立政權(quán)，nation則是指一個(gè)國(guó)家的民族，例如：（1） I have been to many Asian countries（我去過(guò)不少亞洲國(guó)家）。（2） The separation of church and state was achieved about a hundred years ago（政教分離，是大約一百年前的事）。（3） The president told the nation to prepare for war（總統(tǒng)叫國(guó)民備戰(zhàn)）。
