A despondent(沮喪的) woman was walking along the beach(沙灘) when she saw a bottle on the sand. She picked it up and pulled out(拔出) the cork(木塞). Woosh(哎呀)! A big puff(噴) of smoke appeared.
"You have released(釋放) me from my prison(監(jiān)獄), "the genie(妖怪,鬼怪) told her, "To show my thanks, I grant(授予) you three wishes. But take care, for with each wish, your mate(伴侶) will receive(收到) double of whatever you request(要求,請(qǐng)求)."
"Why?" the woman asked. "That bum(游手好閑者) left me for(離開我去找。。。) another woman."
"That is how it is written," replied the genie. The woman shrugged(聳肩膀) and then asked for a million dollars. There was a flash of light(閃現(xiàn)一道光) and a million dollars appeared at her feet. At the same time, in a far-off(遙遠(yuǎn)的)place, her wayward(任性的) husband looked down to see(低頭看見) twice that amount at his feet.
"And your second wish?"
"Genie, I want the world’s most expensive diamond necklace.(鉆石項(xiàng)鏈)" Another flash of light, and the woman was holding the precious treasure(寶物).
And, in that distant(遙遠(yuǎn)的) place, her husband was looking for a gem(寶石) broker(經(jīng)濟(jì)人) to buy her latest(最新的) bonanza(寶物,富礦帶,好運(yùn)).
"Genie, is it really true that my husband has two million dollars and more jewels(珠寶) than I do and that he gets double of whatever I wish for?"
The genie said it was indeed true.
"Okay, genie, I’m ready for my last wish," the woman said, "Scare(嚇唬) me half to death."
