        字號:

A heat pump is a single electric system (系統(tǒng),制度) that both heats and cools. In summer, a heat pump is a conventional (普通的,習(xí)慣的) air conditioner which removes heat from a building. In winter, the system reverses itself to use the natural heat that is always present in outdoor air. By taking advantage of the free heat, a heat pump is more economical (節(jié)約的) to operate in winter than a system using electric resistance (阻力,抵抗,電阻) heat. Electric resistance heat uses electricity as a raw (生的,天然的) material to create (創(chuàng)造,產(chǎn)生) heat where no heat existed before. Heat pump, on the other hand, uses electricity to move existing heat from where it already exists naturally (outdoors) to where it is wanted (indoors (在室內(nèi))).
Heat energy will naturally flow from areas of greater concentration to areas of lesser (較少的,次要的) concentration. That is what happens when hot food grows cool. The heat from the food flows into the air in the room until the food stabilizes at room temperature. Blowing air over substance (物質(zhì),本質(zhì),主要部分) will speed up the process (過程,工序,訴訟,加工), which is why a winter day will seem cold when there is a strong wind than when the air is still.
A heat pump uses this heat transfer (轉(zhuǎn)移,轉(zhuǎn)讓,改乘) process to move heat which is always in the air. The outdoor coil (線圈,卷) is made colder than the outdoors air. A fan blows outdoor air across the coil where heat is absorbed by the refrigerant (冷卻劑). The refrigerant is then compressed and moved to the indoor coil and the heat is distributed in the building.
During the summer, a heat pump reverses this process. The indoor coil is made cooler than the indoor air, and so room heat flows into the refrigerant which is compressed and moved to the outdoor coil. The outdoor coil, which is hotter than the outdoor air, will lose heat energy.

A library is a building for a collection (收集,收藏品) of books, magazines, periodicals and newspapers. The books are kept on the shelves in the stack (堆,干草垛) room whereas (鑒于,然而,但是,盡管) the magazines, journals, etc. in the reading room. Modern libraries also have Xerox (靜電復(fù)印) rooms and audio (音頻,聽覺)-visual rooms. If you want to borrow books, you can go to the loan (貸款,借出) desk, look over the correct numbers in the card catalog (目錄,編目錄) and ask the librarian to take them out for you. Or you're allowed to enter the stack room to find the books for yourself. If the library doesn't keep the magazine which carries the article you want, you can borrow the magazine from the other libraries by means of interlibrary loan service. Don't forget to show your library card or I.D. card to the librarian before you go into the reading room, where you can read magazines or newspapers. If you find a good article and want to keep it, you can have it duplicated in the Xerox room. Besides, if you want to watch films or slides, you can ask the projectionist to play the videotape for you in the audio-visual room, where you can also listen to language tapes and music tapes.
