和中文一樣，英語有很多短語、成語和慣用語，但是不是所有的都可以望文生義，并且正確地使用。有些的意思不是每個(gè)字面意義的總和，而是有“言外之意”的。如果英語用法和中文對(duì)比，意義相似者固然不少，不同之處可能更多。
    下列這些英語慣用語或成語，可以望文生義，而且?guī)缀醵己椭形牡囊馑家粯樱骸?a bad egg：一個(gè)壞蛋
    ● behind the times：過時(shí)的
    ● sooner or later：遲早
    ● to pour oil on fire：火上加油
    ● to save one's face：保留面子
    ● to turn over a new leaf：翻開新的一頁(yè)
    ● experience is the best teacher：經(jīng)驗(yàn)是良師
    ● barking dogs seldom bite：吠狗不咬人
    但是下列這些慣用語就不同了，切忌囫圇吞棗，以表層意思誤以為是深層真義：
    ● a busy-body：多嘴愛管閑事的人（不是“忙人”：a busy man）
    ● at the eleventh hour：在最后時(shí)刻（不是“在十一點(diǎn)時(shí)”）
    ● what a shame!：多可惜（不是“多可恥”）
    ● to be taken in：受騙（不是“被接納”）
    ● to pull up one's socks：加緊努力（不是“拉扯襪子”）
    ● to bring the house down：全場(chǎng)喝彩（不是“把房子推倒”）
    ● to think too much of oneself：自視太高（不是“自己在胡思亂想”）
    ● to eat one's words：承認(rèn)說錯(cuò)話（不是“食言”或“失信”）
    ● to draw up a plan：擬定計(jì)劃（不是“畫好計(jì)劃藍(lán)圖”）
    ● John is only too glad to let you go：很樂意讓你去（不是“ 太高興了，不肯讓你去”）
    ● one can't be too careful to do this kind of work：做這種工作應(yīng)該越小心越好（不是“……不應(yīng)該過分仔細(xì)”）
    ● the importance of productivity cannot be over-emphasized ：必須極力強(qiáng)調(diào)生產(chǎn)力的重要性（不是“不可過分強(qiáng)調(diào)……”）
    最后，有些英語習(xí)語，其含義和中文者可能有些歧異。例如： bookworm, to swim with the tide, to wash one's hands of……, in the same boat.
    在英語里，a bookworm 是個(gè)“愛讀書者”，是褒意，但中文的 “書呆子”卻略帶貶意。
    “To swim with the tide”是①順應(yīng)潮流；②隨波逐流，可貶可不貶，但中文多取貶意。
    “To wash one's hands of……”會(huì)有①洗手不干；②斷絕關(guān)系；③不再承擔(dān)責(zé)任，這三個(gè)意思。然而，中文只取“洗手不干”一意，范圍比英語窄得多。
    “In the same boat”的意思是“處于同樣不幸的境地”，如： “Alice stopped schooling because of financial difficulties. Allen stopped schooling for the same reason. Allen and Alice were in the same boat.”可是這句慣用語的中文表面義是“同舟共濟(jì)”，有褒無貶，迥然不同。
