    Kendal mint cake是英國肯達爾市特產(chǎn)，攀山者不少攜作干糧，以補充體力，所以赫克特說：A lot of expeditions stock up on that。Stock up是‘儲備’。要說儲備的東西，可用on/with帶出；要說儲備的用途，則可用for帶出，例如：We stocked up on/with firewood for the winter（我們儲備木柴，準備過冬）。赫克特又談到挪威北部：That's pretty tough country。這個country不是之前談過的‘鄉(xiāng)間’，也不是‘國家’，而是‘有某種特色的地方’，例如open country是‘曠野’，wooded country是‘樹木蓊郁的地方’。We traveled over plains and mountainous country即‘我們走過平原，走過山區(qū)’。留意這個意思的country是不可數(shù)名詞(uncountable noun)，沒有復數(shù)形式，也不可冠以a字。第二版《朗文當代高級辭典》中英雙解本mountainous條下把mountainous country譯做‘多山國家’，恐怕就是譯者誤解了。‘多山國家’應是a mountainous country。說到‘國家’，英文可分為三個字：country、state、nation。Country是指地理上劃分的國家，state是指國家的獨立政權，nation則是指一個國家的民族，例如：(1) I have been to many Asian countries（我去過不少亞洲國家）。(2) The separation of church and state was achieved about a hundred years ago（政教分離，是大約一百年前的事）。(3) The president told the nation to prepare for war（總統(tǒng)叫國民備戰(zhàn)）。
