Are you an international student? An international student is anyone who brings an international perspective to campus. Every year Brown welcomes students from around the world. In fact, about fifteen percent of our students come from abroad. The International Students Resources web portal provides links and information to support services and offers a view of what you can expect as an international student at Brown.
There is not a separate application for international applicants. Please complete the application appropriate to your status as an incoming first-year or transfer student. You should indicate your citizenship according to the passport with which you plan to enter the United States.

Admission Criteria
In considering whether or not Brown is the right choice for you, you should feel confident that your accomplishments would allow you to be admitted to a leading university in your own country.
You should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12-13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
You should plan to sit for national and international examinations, such as the GCE A-levels, German Abitur, French Baccalauréat, Chinese Gaokao, and International Baccalaureate, and submit the predicted or actual scores for those examinations as part of your credentials for admission to Brown. We expect the actual scores to be submitted before matriculation. At the time of application, you and your school should submit a request in writing if you are in a national curriculum but are not planning on taking the corresponding external examinations.
Advanced Standing
Students who have completed 13 years of schooling and who have completed their external national examinations for college-level work with exceptional results may be eligible for some advanced standing or transfer credit at Brown once they become sophomores. International certifications most commonly earned by our students are the International Baccalaureate diploma or A-levels. Other national "13th-year" certification programs, however, may be considered on a case-by-case basis. It should be noted that neither course credit nor enrollment credit is granted for AS or O-level exams.
A student who wishes to apply for advanced standing in order to graduate in fewer than eight semesters must present his or her official credentials for review by the appropriate academic dean and departments. Whether or not a student formally receives transfer credit for the results of his or her national examinations, the student may use approved results to satisfy prerequisites for more advanced courses at Brown where applicable. Formal review of credentials for advanced standing is not offered until a student has been admitted and has matriculated.
Proficiency in English
Since English is the language of instruction at Brown, you must demonstrate that you:
Understand English as spoken in the classroom.
Express thoughts quickly and clearly in both spoken and written English.
Read English with ease.
English language proficiency must be achieved before you are admitted. Brown does not offer courses in English as a Second Language for its undergraduates and does not accept on a provisional basis students who are deficient in English. We highly recommend that international applicants take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the IELTS and arrange for Brown to receive the official results. A TOEFL score of 600 or above on the written exam or 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or an 8.0 on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.

Application Process
All applicants to Brown complete the Common Application as described in the Guide for Applying. Although the forms are geared toward the U.S. secondary school system, they may be used to convey the specifics of any nation's educational system. Please observe the following:
Documents or information that will be part of your application file should be written in English or be accompanied by official translations along with original documents in the original language.
Although an English proficiency examination is not required for admission, we highly recommend that all international students submit the results of the TOEFL or the IELTS.
Brown does not endorse or work with agents or third parties, with the exception of schools, governments, EducationUSA, and community based organizations.
Brown expects that students will demonstrate integrity in completing their application, and that all work presented for admission to the College will be their own. Students who have violated this policy may have their application denied or their admission revoked.
Financial Aid
International students are eligible to apply for University financial aid; however, funding is limited. International applicants must apply for financial aid and receive University Scholarship at the time of their admission to Brown to be considered for financial aid at any point during their 4 years at Brown University. International students who do not apply for and receive financial aid upon admission to Brown, are not eligible for institutional aid in subsequent years even if a student's financial circumstances change or a sponsor discontinues providing support.
Financial aid is need based.
Brown University does not offer any merit awards

In most cases, financial aid awards are applied directly to the student account as a credit towards the cost of tuition, fees, room and meals. The financial aid award will help with the cost of travel, books and personal expenses, but it does not assist with vacation and summer expenses.
Immigration regulations and restrictions on off-campus summer employment in the United States make it imperative that overseas applicants know exactly where they can obtain funds (e.g. family resources, government grants, or savings). All applicants should consult local education officials and make every effort to obtain outside sources of financial aid.
