    杰克是一個大汽車公司的職員，也是一個充滿著中年危機意識的人，他非常憎恨自己的生活和周圍的一切，再加上患有嚴重的失眠癥，于是為了自我救治，他突發(fā)奇想，決定參加團體咨詢會。杰克先是參加了那些絕癥患者的相互撫慰團體，他接觸到了一個全部由患睪丸癌的人組成的社團，杰克和他們互相撫慰和哭泣，而且上了癮。
    一天，杰克遇到了賣肥皂的商人泰勒，他是一個渾身充滿叛逆、殘酷和暴烈的行動力量的痞子英雄。剛一見面，泰勒就向杰克提出了一個奇怪的要求，他要杰克痛打自己一頓，在對打中，杰克體會到了搏斗的樂趣，兩人因緣際會地成了好友。他們開始創(chuàng)建“搏擊俱樂部”：一個讓人們不戴護具而徒手搏擊，宗旨在于發(fā)泄情緒的組織。俱樂部制定了一系列的活動規(guī)則：不許向他人談論俱樂部，只允許兩人對打等等。

    杰克向警察自首，泰勒也追蹤而至，在他們的撕打搏斗中，泰勒手中的槍自然地、魔術一般跑到杰克的手中。杰克無法擊中泰勒，于是將槍口對準了自己，可當槍響時，杰克卻發(fā)現(xiàn)被擊中的人變成了泰勒，他化成了一道輕煙。
