1. make a good person (thing) 成為……人(東西)。如:
He will make a good teacher. 他會成為一位好老師。
If you train hard, you’ll make a good footballer. 如果你努力訓練,你就會成為一名優(yōu)秀的足球運動員。
This coat makes a good present for my mother. 這件外套是送給我母親的好禮物。
注:該結(jié)構(gòu)中的 person, thing 要根據(jù)不同語境選擇適當詞語。
2. make sb (sth) do sth 使某人(某事)做某事。如:
He made me repeat the story. 他要我把那事重講一遍。
Rain makes plants grow. 雨水使植物生長。
I couldn’t make my car start this morning. 今天早上我的汽車發(fā)動不起來。
注:這類結(jié)構(gòu)中不定式不帶 to, 但在被動語態(tài)中須帶 to。如:
He made me go there alone. / I was made to go there alone. 他要我一個人去那兒。
另外,這類結(jié)構(gòu)一般不能將 do 換成 doing。如:
他的笑話使我們笑了。
正:His joke made us laugh.
誤:His joke made us laughing.
3. make sb (sth) done 使某人(某事)被……。如:
He tried to make his ideas known. 他設法讓別人知道他的想法。
She made herself [her voice] heard across the room. 他大聲說話,讓房間另一頭的人能聽得見。
When he speaks English, he can’t make himself understood. 他說英語時還不能讓人聽懂他的意思。
4. make sb sb 使某人成為某人。如:
I want to make you my wife. 他使她成為他妻子。
We made him chairman. 我們選他當主席。
5. make sb sth / make sth for sb 為某人做某事物。如:
He made us coffee. / He made coffee for us. 他為我們泡咖啡。
She made her daughter a dress. / She made a dress for her daughter. 她為她女兒做了件連衣裙。
6. make……into (out of)……使……成為(變成)……。如:
She made the material into a skirt. / She made a skirt out of the material. 她用那塊布料做了一條裙子。
Working in the kitchen made the boy into a good cook. /
Working in the kitchen made a good cook out of the boy.
廚房工作使這男孩成長為一名好好廚師。
注:這類結(jié)構(gòu)通??捎糜诒粍有问?。如:
Glass can be made into bottles. / Bottles can be made out
of glass. 玻璃可做成瓶子。
Rice can be made into wine. / Wine can be made out of rice.
米可以釀成酒。
7. make…of (from)… 由……制成……(通常用被動式)。如:
The chair is made of wood. 這椅子是用木頭做的。
Some paper is made from wood. 有些紙是用木材做的。
Bread is made from wheat. 面包是由小麥加工做成。
注:用介詞 of 和 from 的區(qū)別是:用 of 通常指在制成品中看得出原材料,而用 from 通常指在制成品中看不出原材料。有時某些制成品是否看得出原材料很難分清,則兩者均可用。如:
Steamed bread is made from [of] flour. 饅頭是用面粉做的。
8. make for
(1) 走向,往……走去。如:
It’s late; we’d better make for home. 時間不早了,我們最好回家吧。
As the thief opened the door, the dog made for him. 小偷一開門,狗就向他撲去。
(2) 有助于,有益于,促進。如:
Early rising makes for good health. 早起有益于健康。
The large print makes for easy reading. 大號字體便于閱讀。
9. make it
(1) 及時趕到。如:
You can make it if you hurry. 如果你趕快還可以及時趕到。
We are too late; I don’t think we can make it. 我們太遲了,我想我們難以準時趕到了。
He says he’ll come on time, but he’ll never make it. 他說他明天準時來,但他絕對做不到。
(2) 成功,辦成。如:
He wants to make it as a writer. 他想作一名作家而一舉成名。
You needn’t worry; he will make it. 他不必擔心,他會辦成的。
10. make out
(1) 理解,明白。如:
Can you make him (it) out? 你能理解他(它)嗎?
I couldn’t make out what he meant. 我不懂他是什么意思。
(2) 看清,(勉強)辨認出。如:
I can’t make out his handwriting. 我辨認不出他的筆跡。
We made out three figures moving in the distance. 我們看出遠處有三個人影在移動。
(3) 填寫。如:
Make the check out to me. 支票上填寫清楚給我。
I asked her to make out a receipt. 我叫她打了個收條。
(4) 假裝,裝成,聲稱。如 :
He made out to be ill. 他假裝生病了。
He makes out that he’s younger than me. 他聲稱比我年輕。
11. make up
(1) 構(gòu)成,組成,占。如
Farmers make up only 30% of the total population of the country. 這個國家的農(nóng)業(yè)人口僅占30%。
注:用于此義時,通常用 be made up of 這樣的形式。如:
The United States is made up of 50 states. 美國由五十個州組成。
A car is made up of many different parts. 汽車由許多不同部件組成。
(2) 編寫,創(chuàng)作,編輯。如:
He asked us each to make up a dialogue. 他叫我們每人編一個對話。
One of our students made up the school song. 我們的一個學生創(chuàng)作了這首校歌。
(3) 編造,捏造。如:
It’s not true. He made it up. 那不是真的,是他捏造的。
The whole story is made up. 整個故事都是虛構(gòu)的。
(4) 和解,言歸于好。如:
Why don’t you make (it) up with her? 你為什么不與她和好呢?
At last they’ve made up after their quarrel. 他們爭吵后終于和好了。
(5) 彌補,補償,補上。如:
You must make up the work you missed. 你得補上你耽誤的工作。
We should let him make up for his mistakes. 我們應該讓他將功補過。
(6) 化妝。如:
She makes herself up in the morning. 她早上化妝。
(7) 湊足。如:
We can’t make up the money. 我們湊不足錢。
(8) 準備好,做好。如 :
Bring the sheets and make up the bed. 拿床單來把床鋪好。
