A UNIVERSITY degree is increasing in value with the average graduate salary worth $66,000 after four years in the workforce - a pay rise of 40 per cent from their first job in 2008.

Graduate Careers Australia surveyed nearly 12,000 students who had finished university in 2007. Beyond Graduation 2011 tracked salaries, employability, relevance of discipline studied to current job, hours worked, and prevalence of postgraduate study of students from 34 Australian universities.
Phil Lewis, director of the Centre for Labour Market Research at the University of Canberra, said structural change in the economy over the past three decades had greatly favoured people with a degree.

Graduates in engineering and related technologies were the best paid last year, earning an average of $76,000, followed by IT ($75,000) and management and commerce ($70,000).
