美國大學(xué)服裝設(shè)計(jì)專業(yè)學(xué)以培養(yǎng)學(xué)生人文素質(zhì)與表達(dá)服裝設(shè)計(jì)創(chuàng)作之專業(yè)技術(shù)與能力為教育目標(biāo)，透過作品競賽、展演等創(chuàng)作驗(yàn)證發(fā)展個人特質(zhì)與設(shè)計(jì)創(chuàng)作力，同時為服飾產(chǎn)業(yè)人才需求以及擴(kuò)展學(xué)生就業(yè)空間，分別規(guī)劃設(shè)計(jì)、經(jīng)營企劃、生產(chǎn)管理、織品設(shè)計(jì)等專業(yè)輔助選修課程，為服飾產(chǎn)業(yè)培育全方位之專業(yè)人才。
    目前中國的服裝行業(yè)里，專門從事服裝行業(yè)的人不在少數(shù)，但是懂服裝行業(yè)的人卻很少，普遍缺乏高素質(zhì)的專業(yè)人才，是中國服裝行業(yè)的一個顯著特點(diǎn)，同時也反映出了在這方面的專業(yè)教育資源的短缺。
    隨著留學(xué)熱潮的到來，也有越來越多的藝術(shù)類學(xué)生涌向海外。我們知道，歐洲及美國等發(fā)達(dá)國家的專業(yè)教育已經(jīng)經(jīng)歷了上百年的歷史，無論是服裝設(shè)計(jì)、營銷還是視覺藝術(shù)等方面，都經(jīng)歷了多年的市場考驗(yàn)，并且針對企業(yè)的實(shí)際需求延伸出了許多應(yīng)用性很強(qiáng)的邊緣學(xué)科，比如商品企劃，采購學(xué)等，這些專業(yè)教育也的確為企業(yè)提供了更多可應(yīng)用型的專業(yè)人才。但在國內(nèi)，在這方面國內(nèi)卻相對比較薄弱。

    Fashion Design學(xué)生畢業(yè)后的就業(yè)，擔(dān)任服裝設(shè)計(jì)師；服裝造型師；服裝打版師；織品設(shè)計(jì)師；服裝企劃、陳列設(shè)計(jì)、經(jīng)營企劃人員；服裝生產(chǎn)管理人員；國高中職校服裝類家事類教師，以及在流行搭配、流行報(bào)導(dǎo)、國際貿(mào)易實(shí)務(wù)等領(lǐng)域一展長才，成為引領(lǐng)服飾流行風(fēng)潮的先驅(qū)。

    四、設(shè)置服裝設(shè)計(jì)專業(yè)的學(xué)校
    在申請方面，美國大學(xué)服裝設(shè)計(jì)專業(yè)除了托福成績之外(僅小部分學(xué)校接受雅思成績)，申請服裝設(shè)計(jì)專業(yè)本科需要參加SAT考試，Mater Degree的話，如果是偏設(shè)計(jì)方面的專業(yè)，一般不需要GRE成績，但也有少部分學(xué)校有要求。
